When you hear SHINE Health & Wellness owner Nicole DeWard talk about her business, her passion is contagious. Her focus at SHINE is to focus on the entire person and their needs, regardless of gender or age. “SHINE services men and women from the youngest, of age 7, all the way to 87,” DeWard said.
A glance around the building in Roswell, Georgia and you can quickly see SHINE is more than a gym. It’s a wellness center. The staff focuses on fitness, nutrition, and therapy. There are multiple aspects to therapy, including detox therapy. “We do a lot of detox therapy, a lot of nutrition coaching. All of that stuff is very therapeutic,” DeWard told us.
SHINE’s approach to wellness is comprehensive, science-based, and depends on individual needs. Coaches focus on building healthy habits, like nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress management, and flexibility.
While SHINE serves men and women, DeWard says it’s important that her business is women-led. “As a woman, I am very proud to own my own business. I’m very proud to employ other women who have a heart for leadership. I think of my employees as people who are partnering with me to grow this business.”
Only about 30% of business owners are women, according to data from the Small Business Trends Association. While that is still a small percentage, the number continues to grow.

Nicole’s story is part of our Lucie Series, where we SHINE a light on all of the good things people, businesses, and nonprofits are doing around us. Our name, Lucie, means light!
