“My sophomore year of undergrad, I had this crazy, wild vision to write and publish my own book,” Leah Hernandez recalls. “And, going through that journey of publishing, taught me a lot about the industry.”
By her junior year, another opportunity sparked. A mentor told Hernandez about an Atlanta Housing Authority grant designed to connect with local youth, and she knew it was worth pursuing. What started as a small pilot became something unforgettable: four young girls co-wrote and published Roxy’s Day in Vine City, a story rooted in their own community.

This story is part of Lucie Content’s “6 Stories in 6 Days” anniversary campaign, spotlighting Atlanta organizations and leaders making a difference. As a content marketing agency in Atlanta and video production agency in Atlanta, Lucie Content’s mission is to shine a light on people and programs creating impact through storytelling.
Representation Matters on Every Page
“I think it’s important for everyone to see themselves represented in all art mediums,” Hernandez said in a video feature by Lucie Content.
The program is built on a simple truth: kids connect more deeply with books when they can see themselves in the story. But the impact doesn’t stop at representation. These young authors learn the craft of storytelling, gain confidence, and even earn royalties from their sales.
Every book is crafted with intention. Picture books can span up to 32 pages, while board books are kept concise at five to 10 pages. To bring each story to life, Young Authors Publishing partners with a talented team of children’s book illustrators from around the globe. Some are Atlanta-based artists, and others are international creatives, each carefully chosen to match the project’s style and tone so the visuals reflect the heart of the story.
Partnerships and Free Books for the Community
Through collaborations with Atlanta Public Schools and literacy nonprofits, the program has developed a curriculum to help classrooms guide students through writing and publishing.
